Chugga Lug!

Thanks for the wellwishes.  They’re appreciated more than you know.  I’ve been in hybernation mode since it happened.  Spending lots of time with the puppies and Kahuna and stitching almost every waking moment.

I got the following from Melissa’s blog and thought it rather appropriate.  It does sort of describe, a little bit, who I am:

The Recipe For Terri

3 parts Energy
2 parts Panache
1 part Vitality
Splash of Fearlessness
Chug!

I also saw a wonderful post from her about the word for the year. Funny, that. I’ve been thinking of my 2008 goals and there’s a word that has been popping up everytime I try to pen them…..perseverance.

What is perseverance?

Perseverance is commitment, hard work, patience, endurance – it’s being able to bear difficulties calmly and without complaint – it’s trying again and again.

All great masters are chiefly distinguished by the power of adding a second, a third, and perhaps a fourth step in a continuous line. Many a man had taken the first step. With every additional step you enhance immensely the value of you first. Ralph Waldo Emerson

The rewards for those who persevere far exceed the pain that must precede the victory. Ted W. Engstrom

May 2008 be everything you hope it to be.

Friday night is date night

and this past Friday night I had a date with 2 fire trucks, 1 ladder truck, 1 ambulance, 2 military police officers, 1 housing manager, 1 facility maintenance worker, 2 plumbers, various other people of authority, a few neighbors, Kahuna and the puppies.

Last weekend Kahuna bought our flat screen TV. On Tuesday he started checking out of his current unit and when he got to Base Housing they told us we had to move out of housing. On Wednesday he went to the management office of the company who had taken over part of military housing. He spoke to a man there that told him we would not have to move, there were a lot of people living in their housing that worked on a couple of different bases, and besides those of us living in the area where we lived never caused any trouble.

Kahuna has been under the weather all last week so he’s been spending some time in bed when not at work. Friday he was feeling better, and had ½ the day off for Christmas, so he got out the instructions for the wall hanging jobber for the TV and figured out what needed to be done. He needed another pair of hands so waited on me to get off work. He had been feeling better earlier and was going to swim with me so I went home instead of straight to the gym. When I got there he was in bed, so I decided we’d tank the swim for now and work on the TV and I’d go swim later.

He had already removed everything out of the way, so all we needed to do was find the studs and get hanging. When we were looking for the studs he was having trouble with his stud-finder. It was register the stud coming from one direction, but when he’d go to confirm it from the other direction it would “hit” about 3 inches off. He got ticked off with his cheaper finder, tossed it across the room with a few choice words, and went and got the big guns. By this time the puppies had gotten bored with what we were doing and had trotted off down the hall to get under the covers. The new stud finder seemed to work better. Once it registered, finding the first direction mentioned above, he confirmed it, got a slight hit, then a stronger one 3″ over on the original direction, and marked that spot.

I had stepped into the kitchen to turn the fire down on the stove because I had forgotten I was heating up some leftover stew and could hear him start to drill. When I came back around the corner into the living room he was grumbling about the drill not working properly and thought he was drilling “backwards.” He checked the direction and went at it again, but was having trouble drilling into the stud. By this time I was standing shoulder to shoulder with him ready to hand him something (I cannot remember what I was holding).

He was pushing for all he was worth against the drill to get it to go in. I remember thinking at the time that he must have found a nail head, when the drill suddenly went in. As soon as he pulled it out we both heard the angry hiss of gas, looked at each other and ran in opposite directions. Him out the front door, me out the back slider, into a locked back yard. Of course the puppies are still snuggled up under the covers, the stove is still burning and the gas heater is going.

I went back into the house, where the smell of gas was already so strong, and yelled for the dogs as I ran into the kitchen and hit the knob on the stove to turn it off. Bandit came running followed quickly by Harley. I got them to follow me back out the slider but I couldn’t breath well enough to find the closure to the doggie door and I knew that if I didn’t catch them they’d head back inside because it was cold outside. I managed to catch Bandit’s collar but as soon as Harley saw that she thought we were playing chase and immediately started to run from me every time I got near her.

All this time all I could think about was me squatting in front of a 6′ plate glass window and glass slider and the house filling with gas which could explode at any second because the heater was still going, and I knew it was bad because I could start to smell the gas coming out of the doggie door. I got down on my knees and asked God to please let me catch my girl before the house blew up and cut us to shreds. She walked over to me and put her feet on my chest, I scooped her up and pulled Bandit by his collar as far away from the house as I could get (which isn’t very far).

All the dogs in the neighborhood were barking. Not a single neighbor came out to see why, which is so weird since they always do. I had no idea where Kahuna was or what was going on and I couldn’t get out of the backyard because we keep the gate padlocked to keep people from letting the dogs out. I was dressed in very thin clothing (normally would be my pj’s) and was starting to get cold, but more than anything I was scared. The girl that lives behind me finally came out to smoke, I told her what was going on, she put her cigarette out and told me she could see Kahuna from where she was standing. He was with our next door neighbor trying to turn the gas off but when maintenance had painted our house a few years back they had painted over the knobs and he couldn’t get them to turn with what tools the neighbor had. Of course we had a wrench heavy-duty enough to do this in our garage.

I found out later that Kahuna had gone back into the house to grab his cellphone to call 911 and turn off the heater and had left the front door open on his way back out. I managed to get the girl to get Kahuna to come and get the puppies and our next door neighbor kenneled his dogs and let ours run in his backyard. I don’t remember how I did it but I managed to get back into the house a 2nd time to find the closure for the doggie door. I remember saying over and over “Oh, God, please., Oh, God, please.” Poor Harley could see me in our yard and stood in the corner of their yard crying for me to come and get her. I think talking to her kept me calm, because I really was starting to freak out that I couldn’t get out of the yard.

Kahuna finally came back to talk to me and brought me his surf “cape” he changes under to help me keep warm. The fire trucks had arrived a bit before that but I had no idea what was going on. I could tell they were in the house because I could see the lights they wear flashing across the closed blinds. One of them finally came to the gate with bolt cutters so I could get out.

My front yard looked like something out of a movie. The street was blocked off at both ends, curious neighbors across the street were told to go back inside by the MP’s. The neighbor who shares our duplex was out front and his wife had taken their daughter away to a movie when she found out what was happening. The other neighbor’s wife and 2 kids were out shopping and were phoned to not come home right now. There were fire hoses going everywhere. My neighbor told me when the firemen had arrived the gas was bad enough they thought there would be an explosion so had pulled out the hoses and hooked them to the hydrant. I think what kept that from happening was Kahuna leaving the front door open after his trip back inside.

They set up these huge turbine-type fans in every room, opened all the windows and blew the gas out of the house. I had the bathroom door closed in my bedroom and once I got back into the house I went in there and could not believe how much gas was in that room. They had not opened the door.

Remember the man at the management office that had told Kahuna on Wednesday that we could stay….he’s the one who was on duty and came to see what was going on in our normally quiet housing area and he laughed when he saw whose house it was because he remembered Kahuna. He also arranged for 2 plumbers to come and tear a hole in the wall and replace the pipe we had drilled into so we, and the other side of the duplex, would not be without heat and hot water. I will be forever thankful for those 2 men.

I’m also thankful I believe in prayer.

I’ve tried to write about this for 2 days and even now on Monday, I’ve had to wipe away the tears re-living this. We tried to go about our normal lives on Saturday and Sunday. I couldn’t even talk about it to friends we met for dinner and a movie. I’ve played so many “what-ifs” over and over in my head. The main one was what-if pulling that drill out had caused a spark with the two of us stupidly standing side by side right in front of that gas line that I feel I should have known was there.

Later that evening when we were cleaning up the mess left from the firemen’s boots and the plumbers’ saws, etc., I found the stud-finder Kahuna had tossed across the room. We both kind of chuckled as I told him to apologize to it and put it in a safe place. It tried to do its job, we just didn’t listen.

Last night we watched our new TV. It works just fine not hanging on the wall.

I never did swim and we’re moving in April, after Kahuna’s half ironman.

Merry Christmas!

Thursday, the new Friday!

This may very well be the new day of the week that I look forward to.  No training today.
All training currently being done indoors.

The meeting with the PT was a bust.  It was all talk 🙁  Next Tuesday will be all work though, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she has me doing.  I have some specific goals that are tri training specific.  I want my shoulders stronger for the swim, since there’s no kicking, and I want my knees and hip flexors to withstand the cycling and running required.  Everything else will be icing.  Whatever I did to my abs seems to be clearing up.  I haven’t tried to twist and stretch to that side yet, but I have noticed that it’s not bothering me at all when I do other things.
The 2-mile bike was a snap.  I didn’t even break a sweat.

Walk for 20 minutes

I felt really weak walking last night.  I don’t know why but because of that I was dreading the swim.  Whatever it was did not affect my swim, because I cut 4 minutes off Monday’s time.  Rather disappointing to only be in the pool such a short time.  I’m still not able to complete 100 meters, but I’m getting closer and closer.

I’ve decided to kick back into gear the job hunting.  I’ve been driving everyday for a month now and I just cannot stand the frelling traffic.  I’m probably going to have to go back to full-time, but I refuse to work anywhere again that requires me to leave my house before 7:30 to be to work before 9.   Last Friday it took me an hour an a half to get home, in the rain, leaving the office at 3:00.  I may have understood if I had been leaving at 5.  Tuesday it took me an hour and a half to get to work.   Now that we have the fitness center to train in, I’m not so worried about time for that, since it’s open 24 hours a day.

Going to look at a house this weekend that has a lap pool in the backyard.  They’re asking more than we’re willing to pay, but it’s in a neighborhood we like and newer than what we’ve been looking at.  The realtor wants us to look at it so she can find a happy medium.  I really like that she’s working hard for us knowing that it’ll probably be as late as next fall before we actually buy; however, we have told her that if the right house comes along we’ll buy sooner.

More rain expected from tonight through the weekend.  Sounds like snuggle and chili weather to me!

Harley continues to want in my lap with Bandit.  I’m going to have to get the camera out so Kahuna can show the puppy pile with me at the bottom.

December goals

It’s been forever since I set down any goals in my blog. I’ll have to check what my goals were for stitching on my old blog before this month is out to see how dismally I failed at them. 😉

But, it’s December and I’m making monthly goals.

Fitness goal 1: I’m in a swim challenge right now. My goal is to swim 3,550 meters.

This is a small amount compared to some of my team members, but it’s what is scheduled for my training this month.

Fitness goal 2stick with my training.

This is my first day, of my first month of triathlon training and it’s a bit daunting to look forward and see all that’s expected of me.

Stitching: Continue working on French Alphabet Sampler as often as possible.

It’s rather hard to stitch these days because of puppies! Bandit is so used to sitting next to me while I stitch, and Harley wants to be included. Twice last night I ended up setting my stitching aside because Harley would jump up in my lap and slooooowly slide off until she was sitting on Bandit’s head. He would get grumbly, so I’d put my stitching away so there would be more room in the chair. Then if I had to get up, like to check the laundry, I’d come back to find my fibers birdnested and an innocent looking Harley giving me a “what???” look. Stinker. Bandit used to do the same thing and I guess I need to be retrained to put my stuff very far away when I’m not using it. I’m trying not to discourage Harley from wanting to sit with us. She’s a bit of a growly girl and can be possessive, so the fact that she’s jumping into my lap while Bandit’s sitting there and not getting growly is a positive step for her. Patience.

We had a super busy weekend and it was nice. Kahuna hasn’t been able to surf because we had a major rainstorm on Friday. Saturday morning we hit the fitness center and then went to see a house. Gang members had broken in and tagged the inside. I feel really badly for the owners, but it’s obvious it’s been empty for awhile. The great thing about looking at it was that it allowed us to adjust what we’re willing to spend and the square footage we’re looking at. Afterwards we went to grab some lunch to go and headed home to watch the LSU game and Ironman. Sunday I left the house around 8:30. I made a quick stop back to drop off groceries, eat some sushi and Kahuna and I headed back out and didn’t get back home until 4. Productive day, though.

And now it’s Monday and I’m back in the office doing things I don’t want to do. My feet and hands are cold and even though I keep bumping up the heater it’s not helping. It’s causing me to drink more hot tea than I should in an attempt to keep warm. I wonder how well heated up Propel tastes?

Puppies! (picture intensive)

It sure doesn’t seem like we’ve had her very long, but my little Harley Quinn has gone from being a chubarita at 3 months old1-05-07harley.jpg to a pretty little runway model at 1 year old.dsc00353.JPGdsc00332.JPG

She and Bandit are usually in the bed or on their perch. They’re always together and go from fighting to snuggling in 2 seconds flat.  Since getting the two of them, we’ve given up on making up our bed all the way (and some days at all) or being able to sit by ourselves.  But that’s okay, we got them to spoil. She is Kahuna’s Honey Bunny and he is my Sweetie Baby. They both bring much joy and laughter and sometimes a bit of aggravation, but they are completely worth it.

Back on track and determined to keep at it. My heel did bother me just a little this morning, but once I was warmed up I forgot about it. I didn’t really know how far I’d walked until I got home and mapped it out. I managed to walk through my calf pain the first time, and it didn’t return until the end. My goal was to walk for 30 minutes this morning, but I was thinking my route would be smaller. So, I walked 1.5 miles in less than 30 minutes. 18.6-minute mile. Cool! That still puts me under an hour for a 5K, just barely.

Dr. has decided I need surgery on my elbow. He’s convinced that sometime in my life I had to have hit my elbow and scar tissue is now interfering with my ulnar nerve. He also sees carpal tunal in my future. Getting old sucks! I told him to do whatever it takes to get me healthy. I’m on a roll and don’t want to let anything stop me. He has referred me to a surgeon that specializes in elbows down to fingertips. I’m now waiting to see if military insurance will cover it.

Sweet pea Harley wasn’t feeling well yesterday so I ended up shampooing my dining room and bedroom last night. I’ll take exercise in any form I can get it! She seems to be feeling better this morning, wanting to snuggle and it would have been soooo easy to be late for the train.

Don’t adjust your TV folks, I’m off a day, not you 😉

I felt awful yesterday so didn’t get out of bed. Went to an outdoor concert Sunday and got sunburned. Then went out to eat and had a hamburger and fries. I ended up not eating all of the hamburger, and remember saying several times that the fries were so salty tasting, but that didn’t stop me from eating them! Yesterday morning, I paid for abusing my body. I was dehydrated from the sun and the salt and didn’t  sleep well from the food and the sun. Tried to walk when I got home from work last night, but no go. I had to fight to keep food down all afternoon.

I did get my butt out of bed this morning, though, and had a great walk (0:18:40)! I cut 50 seconds off my time from last Friday. I’m going to have to start walking further because it’s no longer taking me 30 minutes to walk a mile, so starting tomorrow, I’m going 1.5 miles. Yay me! I’ve got my positive attitude back.

Lesson learned? I don’t eat that way anymore.

Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes.
I am so weary.  I feel like I could weep if I just let my guard down for 1 second.  I know why.   I know how I can make it go away, but then it will only be replaced by wanting to weep because I’m a failure.

I know the power of 1 hour of sleep.   I did not get to sleep on time Monday night, and Tuesday’s strength training paid for it.  I increased my weights and was unable to do 2 full sets.  I know it was because I was tired and because of the increase, but it was mostly because of that 1 hour of sleep and hitting the snooze button too many times.

I know the power of 1 hour of sleep.  I stayed up 1 hour past my bed time last night and watched The Biggest Loser.  I only hit the snooze button 1 time.  The 1 time the time on my alarm allows for.  I managed to do 6 1-minute intervals this morning.  1 more than Monday and cutting a whole 14 seconds off my loop.

6 1-minute intervals 0:19:25

I know the power of baggie britches, too though.  This morning I’m wearing a pair of pants that I will probably be passing on in 2 weeks.

My shoulders are stiff from strength training, and right now I don’t feel strong.  My legs feel like they weigh 200 pounds.  My right foot feels like I’m walking around with a golfball in my shoe.  I feel so beat down and so, so weepy weary.

The girls that work at the coffee shop I stop at every morning know of my plans to race in November and are being very supportive.  They will be open that morning and I cannot wait to stop by there afterward and get a cuppa and tell them that I did it.  This morning I am fighting the doubts.

Sunday morning musings

So far my weekend has been almost perfect! The weather could not be any better right at this moment and I’ve almost been able to forget how miserable we were just a week ago.

Yesterday Melissa came down and we went shopping, again! I don’t know about her but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I managed to buy 2 new outfits for work, and a few other things. We also went and found Coldwater Creek, and I was very impressed with the store. I think between the two of us we managed to touch every single item in there, at least once. My main goal was to try on a pair of pants, since I can order my size from them online, and they have several things online that they don’t carry in their small store. They didn’t have my size, but I was able to gauge what size I need from the pair they did have. When we got home the 2 suits I had ordered from them last week were waiting on me. I cannot wear the pants, just yet, but the blouses and jackets fit nicely and I have other pants that will go with them for now.

Weigh in this morning was a bit of a surprise. I was originally told that I had lost NINE pounds, and I cried a bit, but once my head cleared and our meeting was over I got to thinking how it just didn’t sound right. I talked to Melissa after the meeting and figured out during that conversation that the lady had seen a zero and thought it was a 6. Quite frankly I’m rather glad that I only lost 3 pounds instead of 9 because I tend to do really well once week and really low the next and I was kind of scared (for wont of a better word) what the scale would do next week with such a large loss this week. So, I’m really thrilled with this week’s WI.

Kahuna has figured out that I want to do a triathlon. I don’t know why I think I can keep anything from him. He knows me to well. I’m trying to figure out what the main clue was though. Do you think it was my asking him to show me what a cassette and Derailleur is, or do you think it was my asking him what the difference was between 2-bolt and 3-bolt cleat compatibility. Who knows.

Right now there’s a wonderful group of people who are attempting their first Ironman in Wisconsin today and I wish them all lots of luck and can’t wait to read their race reports.

c25k – w2d3

Stayed home from work yesterday. Couldn’t keep any food inside of me. I did do upper body training yesterday but was afraid I couldn’t make it to work, either driving or on the train, without having to stop several times.

Today I was determined to get out there and run. I managed 3 minutes and did the full 1.1 mile loop. I was more relaxed than normal. Last week I mostly walked what I thought was 1.2 miles in 19 something minutes. Today I did a true 1.1 mile in 19:27

I found a wonderful poem (The Race) this morning. I’m printing the portion below, in large print, to put on my mirror and read every evening before I go to bed and every morning when I first get up. There is a link to the whole poem on my Motivation page.

For all of life is like that race,
With ups and downs and all.
And all you have to do to win
Is rise each time you fall.
“Quit! Give up, you’re beaten!”
They still shout in my face.
But another voice within me says:
“Get up and win the race!”
