Sunday Stitching Report

Why not?  LOL

I finally took a very (horrible) photo of And They Sinned Thursday evening.  I pulled it out to show at the LNS before I started my new Elizabeth Sheffield sampler.

This is approximately 180 hours over about 65 days. 2013-08-01 17.02.31

Poor thing is so wrinkled, but that’s only because it has been so loved!  I still love every stitch and will be right back to it when I finish up the first section of Elizabeth Sheffield for Sampler Sunday.

Thank you for your comments on my FAB4FOCUS post.  I will be mentioning it quite frequently in hopes that it gets shared elsewhere and generates more interest.

Sunday Stash Report

This week has nothing but fabric going out.  Not much, but still, all going out.  I’ve been spending the majority of my needle-in-hand time working on a couple of cross stitch projects, but I did manage to do a little sewing yesterday on my signature swap blocks.

A lot of cutting, and a couple of sewn together blocks.  This week I’m only counting what I’ve already sewn together, even though I normally count it as “out” when I cut it.

Fabulous, Focused, 2014

WARNING: This post may contain rambling, confessions, grammatical horrification, a little guilt, and hopefully a few thought-provoking plans for 2014.

If you were to make a list of all your crafting/hobby Works in Progress (WIPs) or Unfinished Objects (UFOs) would it scare you, or cause you to be disappointed in yourself?  Are you still in love with every single one of them and want to finish them all?  Are you overwhelmed by that number and do not know where to start to get them all done?

That pretty much describes me.  I have ADD.  No, really, I do.  (I will give you a minute to get over your surprise.)  Because of that, in order to get practically anything accomplished, I have become a list maker in many areas of my life. Sometimes I have more than one list covering the same thing.  In other words I have to stay focused to get things accomplished.

For my needlework, if it is not in my face it is off my radar. I know I am not the only one who suffers from that.

Someone will mention they are working on a project and I am reminded that I have something similar that I started eons ago so I go looking for it.  I start digging through my WIPs and almost immediately start feeling guilty about all of my long-lost, and much-loved, projects that I want to finish.

Or a new something comes along and I jump on that bandwagon and I am adding 2 (or 5) more WIPs to a list and the guilt starts all over again.  (Of course, sometimes there is no guilt involved, but I still get a few heart palpitations over the amount of WIPs I have.)

Throw in having more than one hobby, craft, obsession, whatever you want to call it, and it really starts getting out of hand and the numbers go from single digit, to double-digit, and for some people, triple digits.

Well, I am determined that 2014 is going to be a FABulous year in a great many ways but for my hobbies it is going to be a FAB4FOCUS year.

I am going to focus on 4 projects at a time – for 4 quarters – in 2014 – in each of my two favorite obsessions – Quilting and Cross-stitch.

I have not worked out all of the kinks yet, but it will go something like this:

For my cross-stitch I am going to pick 4 WIPs that I want completely finished and either hanging on my wall or show-cased in my house somewhere.  I will ONLY work on one of those 4 projects until they are finished and by finished I mean take it to the framer, or stitch it up, make it into a box, whatever it takes to call it F.I.N.I.S.H.E.D.!

I have not yet decided on my cross-stitch projects.  I started a private sampler stitch-along yesterday that is goal-based.  It will be completed over 6 months so it will be the first item on my list and thus will be the first thing I stitch on each month until I stitch to our goal.  I am also hoping to finish And They Sinned before the end of the year but my two-month long stitching slump put me behind, so it may be on the list as well.

I also have a huge box of items that are completely stitched that need to be finished.  Many of them need to go to the framer, but many are ornaments that need to be finished.  Yup, they are going to make the list, too.

If I were to choose my 4 cross stitch projects today, my focus list might look like this:

1.  Elizabeth Sheffield (stitch toward goal)
2.  And They Sinned (20 hours a month and focus on this piece if everything else is finished)
3.  And A Sampler Grew – finish out pin pillow and scissor fob
4.  French Alphabet Sampler – find it, frog error in border, order new fiber to re-stitch border

I am also going to pick 4 quilting projects, but this list will be a little different from my cross-stitch list.

I have 2 Blocks of the Month (BOM) starting – one at the end of 2013 and one at the beginning of 2014 and they will count as one item.  If I keep them on my list that will help me stay on track to have all of the blocks stitched and 2 large quilts finished.  One is a 9-month program and one is a 12-month program.

I also have several Jo Morton Little Women club quilts that I want to finish so they will be one item on my list.

Another item will be the quilts I am making for my son, niece, and seven nephews – for a total of 9 quilts.

The last item will be determined closer to the beginning of the year, but I have plenty to choose from.  So today my example list would look like this:

1.  BOM
2.  JMLW club quilt
3.  Son’s quilt
4.  Sampler quilt table topper binding

I am a “quilt with your checkbook” gal, except for the JMLW quilts, so I still have some figuring out to do when a quilt is out for quilting and that slot is temporarily empty.

If I have finished something I will add something else in, but not to the neglect of what is already on the list.

I plan on doing 4 reviews during the year to see how I feel about my projects. I will decide to keep them on the list if they’re not finished, or I will get them OUT OF MY HOUSE.  I am a member of enough online groups that I know I can find someone who might love my project if I no longer do.

So why am I sharing this in August?  Well, since misery loves company I am hoping someone will either volunteer to ride roughshod over me to help keep me going, or will want to play along, too – which will also keep me going.

I am sharing this in July hoping others might share it on their blogs/forums and to give anyone who wants to play time to think about how they want to organize their own 4 projects.

And, I am sharing this now because once August gets here my year is over in a minute!

Last but not least, it is a list 😀

You do not have to have multiple hobbies to play.  Nor do your hobbies have to be cross-stitch or quilting.  Scrapbookers, card makers, knitters, crocheters, chain maillers, needlepointers, beaders, and any other hobbiest I might have left out, please come share!

Right now the plan is share a list on Sunday what was accomplished the previous Sunday-Saturday and what to accomplish the next Sunday-Saturday.  Review at the end of the quarter for any adjustment that needs to be made for the next quarter, i.e., get rid of something no longer loved, add in new start, etc.

No sign up will be necessary if anyone wants to join me.  Just jump in whenever you start, post your goals for your first Sunday – Saturday, and link up to my blog so we can encourage each other. Each week after that post your goals for next week, your accomplishments from last week, and link up so we can continue to encourage each other.

Back in the saddle

If anyone is still reading, I apologize for not posting anything of substance lately. I have been a bit busy.

I traveled to Nashville to enjoy the company of some wonderful needlework friends, many of whom I’ve only known from “online” for 12+ years. Finally getting to hug them in real life was such a wonderful thing and from all of the conversations we had you would never have known that we had never met face-to-face before then. I had a blast and was worn out when I got home from all the talking, shopping, eating, humidity, and lack of sleep from some very late-night conversations with my roommate. It’s an annual event, next year will be hosted in Arizona, and I’m already counting down the days.

I had been in a stitching slump prior to my trip, and being with those women took care of it. I have been making great progress on And They Sinned. I managed to put in about 12 hours in 3 days, which is more than I stitched in 3 months prior to that. Last night was open stitch night at my LNS and there was a wonderful group there. I started a new reproduction sampler, Elizabeth Sheffield, and will be stitching it in 6 parts with 3-4 other ladies. Stitching slump over! Hoorah!

I also managed to stitch all of my squares from JMLW Caramel Corn that I had glue-basted prior to my trip. I am putting off piecing them together for a bit since it’s not due until October, and I have a couple of other things I need to get finished before then. One of them being my signature blocks for the Small Quilts yahoo group I belong to.

I’ve also been spending a little more time on home “renovations.” Plus I’ve gotten to go to work a couple of times and play with the fabric at the store.

And last but not least, since I’ve been spending so much time in my stitching room, I have been thinking about how to wrangle my crafting life back into a somewhat less-scarey monster — but that’s for a separate post 😉

Mister has been working furiously rebuilding the underside of his Jeep Wrangler. It looks so good! I doubt there’s very little there that hasn’t been pulled apart and either replaced, or refurbbed by him. I can attest that, due to the amount of laundry I’ve been doing, it is a very messy job. Living oceanside for 10 years, plus having his surfboards dripping salt water, did a bit of a number on it. He’s moving on to the interior today. My living room has become the storage spot for huge boxes, one of which is a new back seat that he’s starting to install today. He has yet to start working on switching his office with the guestroom, and the cabinet boxes are in the living room too. He is headed back surfing next week, and classes start back the day after he gets back, so those boxes will stay there for a bit. I’m finding that they aren’t upsetting me, like they would have in the past. I just vacuum around them. LOL

Sunday Stash Report

I have received a few emails and at least one comment on the amount I’m adding versus the amount I’m using.  Y’all are so funny.  I do feel like all I ever do is buy, buy, buy, but I’m fairly certain my fabric stash is nowhere near the size of the majority of the people who are participating in the stash busting….thank goodness!  LOL  This is my whole fabric stash:

DSC01613

The bottom shelf is home to Black Betty, and my small amount of batting and a pillow form.  The shelf above that holds the few kits I own, plus the fabric I’ve “kitted” myself.  Above that are my pre-cuts and on the left fabric I purchased while living in Japan and during my visit to Australia.  That’s all!  Oh wait, nope, I have the very large stack of homespun on my cutting table for son’s quilt.  So, see I didn’t start with much, but I still wanted to bust what I already had.

Now, down to business!

Just as I thought, I bought fabric on my trip to Nashville.  I also kept to my shopping list and bought for the small quilt I’m making:

and blenders for my stash:

Back home I bought a little bit of fabric for a gift which will be going out next week so I’m not counting it in the totals:

DSC01612

and the focus fabric for this month’s Jo Morton Little Women club quilt (Four Square).

DSC01604

Normally I buy much more than those two cuts, so I’m thrilled I was able to restrain myself.  I know I have plenty of cheddar and neutral fabrics and am looking forward to pulling bits and pieces out of my scraps for the colored 4-patches.

I pulled a tiny bit more fabric for a local group that quilts for women’s shelters.  I also cut fabric for a small exchange.

Sunday Stash Report

I thought I wasn’t going to be able to post today, but I forgot that I can set a publish time.  As this is posting I’m getting ready to board the plane to wing my way back from Nashville.

I found out that the shop I work at was having a group of women come in on Saturday to make pillow cases  that will be donated to a women’s shelter.  I have been wanting to participate in something like this, but because I was going to be out of town, and wasn’t sure when it was going to happen again, I donated fabric to the group.

I also talked to a quilting friend with a heck of a lot more experience than I have about adding blenders to my current stash and she agreed with what I have been thinking so I brought home a couple of 1/2 yard cuts.

I’m fairly sure I’ll be buying some fabric while traveling (I usually do!) so I’ll add that in to next week’s figures.

I’m really looking forward to see what the future holds now that I no long have a sewing deadline.

Sunday Stash Report

This has been a major “incoming” week for me.  My birthday was a couple of weeks ago and, in a roundabout way, Mister bought me fabric. 😉  One of my online sites had several reproduction fabrics deep discounted and I took advantage by ordering several 1/2-yard and a couple of 1-yard cuts. Unfortunately, all that I ordered was not available, but I’ve very happy with what I did receive.  I love stripes for borders and the blue and tan swirl will be perfect for backing a miniature quilt.

I also added 1/2-yard of red for the gift I’m working on; a couple of FQs and an EOB piece for a small quilt monthly challenge piece in greens and golds; and 2 grab bag bundles for the signature blocks I’m making.

No report next Sunday as I’ll be flying back from Tennessee after spending a long weekend with some stitching friends.

Sunday Sewing

About all I managed to get done yesterday was clear off my cutting table and cut for my hexi quilt.  I only purchased 5 FQs and got them all cut yesterday.  I still need to purchase a red and light blue solid to go with what I already have.  Eventually I want to add in some purple, light green, and a darker blue in the prints.

Today will find me cutting 2 1/4″ strips and binding my gift project, then hopefully on to Son’s quilt.

Time flies when you’re having fun

This has been a weird week!  I feel like I’ve accomplished a whole lot of nothing since my last post.

Thoroughly enjoyed last Sunday’s baseball game.  Even though he’s not the fan of baseball that I am, Mister had a good time as well.

I did get to go to open stitch night at the LNS Thursday.  They were closed last week due to the July 4 holiday.  I feel like the only time I’ve been stitching lately is when I’m there, and I really need to correct that.

Yesterday Mister had his annual physical so I did some dusting downstairs (which is practically a waste of time these days – we had our first haboob yesterday) and laundry.  After he got back we headed out to have lunch and see Man of Steel.  I rarely talk about the movies we see, but will say I was a little disappointed.  I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was that was missing, but I thought the fight scene was way too long, and even caught myself yawning.

One thing I’ve been rather good at this week is piling things up on my cutting table and walking back out the door.  It’s taken me the better part of the past hour, and an episode of NCIS from Season 1 (I’m watching from the beginning), to clean it up enough to be able to cut again.  I need to get some 30s fabrics cut for hexi piecing, then get back to sewing on my gift project.  I’m [this] close to being finished.  After that I’ll be back to the cutting table working on 2 1/2″ strips for Son’s quilt.

I am still enjoying my new LQS job and am happy to see that I’m going to be working 2x a week when I return from my trip.

One last note before back to the cutting table.  I have decided that if I am ever going on a cruise it’ll be without Mister.  He’s of the mind that he “cruised” enough during his 30 years in the Marine Corps, and while I can’t blame him, it doesn’t deter my wanting to go.  So, I’ve decided to combine cruising with quilting.  As soon as I return from my trip I’m going to open a separate savings account and start putting money aside for the 2015 version of either the Legacy Quilting Voyage or Batik Cruise to the Caribbean.  The quilters I know who have been on a quilting cruise had a blast, and even if I have to go by myself, I’ll know I’ll be with like-minded people, so I’m cool with it.

Dinner out tonight with Annette and her Mister.  We’re headed to RA Sushi since they’re giving 100% of their proceeds from yesterday and today toward the recovery of the Yarnell fire and the loss of the 19 firefighters.

Sunday Stash Report

We spent the latter part of the afternoon yesterday taping off and painting the downstairs powder room.  I was a dripping mess by the time we finished.  Two people, in a very small space, with a 6″ A/C vent, that’s on the west side of a home in Arizona where it has been 114 degrees at 5 p.m.  Dripping!  But it’s going to be exactly as I visioned it when the second coat goes on.  Maybe Monday morning.

We also had our first “monsoon” rain and wind sweep through here yesterday evening.  Wonderful light show when we went to bed, and the sound of the rain on the tile roof is lovely.

We’re headed to a Diamondbacks game this afternoon, which I’m really looking forward to, but it means I probably won’t get any sewing time today.  I hope that ends up not being true because I did end up writing Deb Tucker about my problem and she wrote me back.  I now know what size blocks to start with!  Woohoo!
