I haven’t disappeared

I promise to be back with a quick (hahahaha) recap of my trip to Vegas, but I seemed to have acquired some sort of V(egas)T(ransmitted)D(isease) while there that has left me with barely the energy needed to get out of bed and downstairs to snuggle my puppies and drink tea.  Bleh.  I am feeling much better today than yesterday and hoping tomorrow finds me back on schedule.  I would like to get something off my worktable so it’s not quite the disaster photo it was last week 😉

I didn’t want to neglect my blog too much though and I have been waiting for today so I can share a blog post from another needleworker that inspired me to try making a bit of jewelry!

Mayté is someone whose stitching blog I’ve followed for quite some time.  She shared on her blog, in July 2012, a gorgeous bracelet she had made using mother of pearl buttons. She was also generous enough to share some instruction* and photos of how she did it.  It was one of those “aha” moments for me where once I saw what she had created, and I saw how she had created it, I knew I could do it myself.  Ever since, I’ve been studying bracelets at the jewelry counters and saying to myself “I can do that” and I’ve been collecting buttons for my own.  My only remaining decision is whether to create the actual bracelet part myself or purchase a redi-made one.

*you will probably have to translate her blog.

Hello there!

Hello to everyone who came here through Grow Your Blog!

This blog post is coming to you from … Las Vegas!  Woohoo!  I’m sitting in a beautiful 3 bedroom condo on the 5th floor of the Wyndham Grand Desert with 6 wonderful women – 5 of whom I met on the internet over the past 13 years.  We had a conversation over dinner last night about how wonderful the internet is and how grateful we were that we were able to find each other.  We all share a love of needlework in several different forms.   That love of needlework is what caused me to start my blog in the first place, many, many years ago.

So, who am I?

I’m a California girl raised in the south.  I was born in California while my father was stationed at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base.  I was raised in Texas and Louisiana, but lived the majority of my adult life in California.

In 1981 I took a leap of faith and married a man who promised to love and cherish me for the rest of our lives.  Two months later he signed his name on the dotted line and in January 1982 he found himself standing on the yellow footsteps of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and me becoming a Marine Corps Wife.  In 1984 God blessed us with a son.

I’ve lived in California, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina and Japan.   I “retired” October 2011, and moved to San Tan Valley, Arizona in November.  February 2012 found my Marine finally retired after 30 years of service and is currently taking advantage of the VA program and majoring in Art History at Arizona State University.

While I call myself a “cross-stitcher,” I love various forms of needlework; miniature quilts; cooking; reading; and playing the piano.  Late 2012 found me learning to bead and make chain maille, and finding myself devouring decorating blogs that focus on personal creation and repurposing.

I have two Italian Greyhounds that I consider my children and am a huge supporter of Italian Greyhound Rescue.  I hope to someday parent a retired racing greyhound.

I’m beginning to think being a grandmother might not be such a bad thing.

So, that’s pretty much me in a nutshell!

THE GIFT AWAY IS CLOSED

As a thank you for those participating in the Grow Your Blog hop I’ll be offering a chain maille bracelet in the gift away on February 1.  Just leave a comment with a link to your blog.  Thanks 😀

Me and my bright ideas

I actually had a panic moment today when I realized it was Wednesday already and time to show my worktable. And since I’m putting it out there and showing you the real me, I thought I would show you more than the worktable. I’m also going to show you to the right of it, and underneath, and so as not to make it jealous I’m going to show you my desk.

Maybe there are others who are also brave enough to share what their workspaces look like today?

Deep breath. Going in.

This is to the left side.  You can see that even my cutting table (although folded up) is stacked.  The plastic tub that contains the Christmas Woolens pattern and has the red toile box stacked on top is the container I’m using right now to hold the new starts and Summer Soiree stitching stash mentioned in Part 1 of my crafting plans.   And no, Annette, I still haven’t covered my little ironing board.

This photo shows the right side.  The 3 zipper pouches are my patriotic, Halloween, and “other,” cross stitch designs (I say other because I can’t remember what I sorted into that pouch right now), that are waiting for their own chart holder to be labeled for my shelves.  The stuff in front of it, on the tabletop, just needs to be put away.  There’s also a chain maille bracelet project there 😉

DSC01401

Then there’s underneath.  The black drawer unit is actually most of my organized (gasp) quilting fabrics.  The two blue plastic buckets to the right of that contain completely kitted cross stitch items and WIPs.  In front of them, in the Hobby Lobby bags, is craft supplies for a couple of tree skirts and a basket that contains piddly things I need to find a home for.

Last photo of that side of the room is “THE STACK.”  It deserves all caps.  It takes up a lot of real estate both in my room and in my mental calmness.  THE STACK is made up of 4  boxes of items that I’ve decided I no longer love and need to get rid of (except for the clear sewing machine table).  These will be the items I offer up on my blog before putting them out there in internet land.

DSC01400

Last, but not least, is my desktop.   The basket to the left holds the items I need to enter in my spreadsheet before being in their proper spot.DSC01404

Okay, that was actually quite easy!  It’s hitting the “publish” button that’s going to be the hardest part.  I will say that once I started breaking it down I realized that the majority of it is sorted, it just needs to be put away.

I’m headed to Vegas bright and early tomorrow morning.  I have started pulling things out to take with me but they need to be organized into my suitcase and tote.  I have a manicure appointment and a couple of errands, and a mountain of laundry to do when I get home, so there won’t be much organizing of the craft room over the next several days.  I do hope there are some progress photos next Wednesday though.

Expanding my horizons

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a scared ninny when it comes to doing a lot of data/communication/network run things.  I think it’s mostly because I can’t understand the terminology or I’m so afraid of messing up so horribly (maybe because I have in the past?) that I have to beg for help to get myself straightened out. I’m not a new blogger, nor is this my first blog. I think it’s actually my third. But I’ve never done anything to make it “Who I Am.” That’s about to change, I hope.

Last year was a huge step for me in that I added drop down bars to the top of my blog, and figured out how to make a collage for a personalized header.  This year, I just figured out how to take the comments off those pages.  Confetti falls!  I just felt someone roll their eyes, but it’s a big thing for me.  If you look at my blog you might have noticed that over the last week I’ve made some slight changes.

It’s because I bought a 2013 calendar featuring monthly signs and this is what January’s sign is: “One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.

and was inspired by this:

I don’t put myself out there very much. I have a very tiny circle of friends who know the real me. Obviously, by the number of subscribers I have, that circle doesn’t expand much beyond in the blogging world either. I’m hoping to expand that circle by putting myself out there a bit more, both in person and here. I want to live a life worth watching.

Monday already?

Monday’s Musings – Do you have a bucket list?  What’s the 5th item on it?

Mister and I were talking last night about how fast last week flew by.  I think it’s because he’s back in school and we’re both keeping busy.  Time needs to slow down a bit though because I have a lot I want to do 😉

I thought I made a “Goals for January” post but I can’t find it.  Hmmm.  One of the things I wanted to accomplish this month was ticked off my list this weekend.  I signed up for a monthly mini quilt “class.”  How sad is it that I didn’t find the Temecula Quilt Co., until after I moved away from Oceanside!  It would have been less than an hour drive for me to go to that shop.  I found a post early last year of someone who was stitching their monthly minis and made a note to sign up for this year.  I love that it’s an automatic but that you’re not locked in for any length of time.  If it becomes too much, I can just contact them and they’ll cancel my “subscription.”

I’m also on a Yahoo group with a miniature quilt designer who gave out some great advice this past week on how to keep on track to make our mini quilts.

Week 1 – Plan your quilt, pick out your fabrics and cut the pieces.
Week 2 – Sew the cut pieces into blocks.
Week 3 – Put the blocks together and add the borders.
Week 4 – Finish the quilting and add binding.

Looks fairly doable to me. I just need to figure out how to fit in 2 mini quilts 😉

I’m still being a bad “rotator.”  I just can’t put And They Sinned down.  I’m into it about 29 hours now over 10 days.

I’m starting my packing today for my Vegas trip.   Yay!

Blog more

I’ve been looking around for ideas to help me blog more and it has been great to see there are so many people out there searching for the same thing.  Most of the time when I sit down my brain blanks and I can’t think of what I want to talk about.  I’m hoping these ideas will help:

Monday Musing post a question and see if anyone answers it.  (I actually already started doing this.  It was not answered 😆 )

Tuesday Treats –  share a link to a blog that inspired me in one way or another.

Wednesday Worktableshare a photo of my worktable, no matter how embarrassing.  (This should get my behind in gear to keep my worktable organized!  😆  It’s a disaster right now from having stuff unpacked out of the guest room and stacked in my workspaces.   What I really want you to see are my crafty projects and this will also get me taking more photographs with my new camera.)

Thursday Thoughts – how are things going with my goals?   All of them.

Friday Followup – what have I been doing this past week that I haven’t already blogged about?

Saturday Surprise – anything goes.

Gratitude

Since I switched from full crosses to Continental stitch I am really loving Scarlet Letter’s Gratitude.

Here is my first progress photo.  I have completely stitched the little lady on the right, but I obviously took this photo prior to that.  I can only work on her for a short period of time due to the stitch count so I have been saving her for stitch-in at Attic.  I have yet to decide whether or not she’ll be coming to Las Vegas with me next week (squeeeee!  Vegas!!!!  Sorry 😉 )

I bought the majority of required DMC for Berlin Woolwork Sampler yesterday.  The store was out of a couple of colors.  Hoping to cut and serge my fabric today/tomorrow and start organizing all that floss.

If any stitching happens today, before I head to Attic for tonight’s open stitch, it will be on Fairy Moon.  It’s very hard to not keep stitching on And They Sinned.  I am really loving that piece.

First new year progress photo!

I am in love with And They Sinned.  Really in love.  So much in love that it has already made me fail at rotating every 10 hours 😉  I hit that mark yesterday afternoon  – which was Day 4 – and just reset my watch and kept on stitching away.  Part of me said it was because I wanted to make sure my fabric was wide enough, but I really think it’s because I didn’t want to put it down, it’s just a fun stitch.  I’ll attempt to not pick it up today and get back to Gratitude (so I can share a progress photo of her, too).

Here’s ATS in all her wrinkled glory.  I took this snap after I finished the thread used for the green vine on the right.  I’ve since added the diamond-shaped motif that belongs in the upper right of the crown and started stitching the cherub that goes under the right hand crown.

Monday’s Musings

Have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution that you kept?

Many years ago when we lived in Okinawa, Mister and I had a very bad habit of not turning our rented movies in on time.  One year we resolved to start turning them in on time and we succeeded.

I am thankful that we have Netflix and Amazon and On Demand to get movies from now.

Minutiae

Don’t you hate it when you go to bed and your brain won’t shut off!?!?!  Sometimes, hitting “publish” on my blog has the same effect.  This post could probably be a result of both of those events.

While the title of this post is “Minutiae” the post is very long and tedious to probably everyone but me 😉

Goals

I’ve been trying to figure out a “theme” for myself this year.  For some reason in my mind I think if I have a theme it would be easier for me to stick to some goals I want to meet or improve on what I’m already doing.  The word “control” keeps popping in my mind.  I need to better control my weight-loss.  I need to better control my finances.  I need to better control my housekeeping. I need to better control my hobby stash.  Okay, maybe my theme should be “better” since that keeps preceding “control.”

Health

I never discuss my weight-loss efforts here.  I don’t know why.  I know there are other people out there trying to fight the battle of the bulge. I use the online Weight Watchers plan so I can use the eTools.  I do not attend meetings since you have to pay for each one and there are no monthly passes here which automatically give you access to eTools.

My hobbies are very sedentary and I know they don’t help but I refuse to give them up.  I’m going to try to focus more on my weight-loss efforts in 2013.  I weighed less for my first 2013 weigh-in than I did for my first 2012 weigh-in but I’m not happy with that.  My 2 large hurdles are activity and Mister.

Right now it’s too cold to me to walk in the mornings and when the warmer afternoons get here I get too lazy because I’m enjoying snuggling with the puppies and a cup of tea while stitching.  Then the evening arrives and the cold comes back.  I do not have clothing (bottoms) to walk in cold.  I’ve been searching for sweatpants but am surprised at how hard it is to find any right now!  😆

Mister and I have one day over the weekend where we eat out.  In the past it was usually Friday since her didn’t have class and we’d go to the movies and out to eat.  Last year on that day I’d ask first thing in the morning where we would be eating so I could plan my points for the day.  It became quite evident very early on that the answer from him would be very unreliable as he’d quite frequently change his mind and it would be somewhere that was very hard for me to track points on.  I gave in and gave up too easily.  I don’t think he’s doing it intentionally because I know he’s concerned about potential health problems from my weight so this year I plan on being more assertive and in control.   Of course right now he has class 5 days a week 😉

Money

I know.  It’s not polite to talk about money.  Nothing too lower-class here, though.

Once I stopped working and started getting an “allowance” I quit balancing my checkbook.  I am trying to get back into writing checks for two reasons.  First, it helps retailers (who still accept them) save money since they don’t have to pay a fee if I write a check.  I used to offer to use my debit card but these days so many banks charge fees for debit purchases too.  Second, I balance my checkbook religiously when I write checks and I keep a better handle on how I’m spending my money.

I got into a really bad habit this past year of charging things on my credit card and then transferring to cover.  There’s no need for me to be doing this when I don’t get any type of reward for charging on my CC.  I’m also going to increase the amount I’m putting on that CC and get it gone!

I’m also going to start putting some of my “allowance” into savings for “stitchy travel.”

It’s been a bit of a blow to my psyche to become “dependent” on Mister’s retirement pay.  I think doing the above things will help me feel a little more independent and in control.

Homekeeping

I can remember in the not so distant past that every time someone would ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up I would answer a stay-at-home-wife.  I did get to be that for a very short time while we were stationed in Okinawa and I loved it.  Such a shocker since I was raised to be an independent woman (by my father).  This past year has been such a learning experience for me and I can’t wait to see what I learn in 2013.

One thing that I absolutely swear by is FlyLady.  I don’t follow her routines or zones exactly the same as she publishes but I have taken what she’s given me and modified it to work in my home, which is what I believe she wants all of us to do.

Our new home — I guess I should stop calling it that now that I’ve lived here for a year — Our home is twice the size of any house I have ever lived in.  I knew immediately that I would have to change my housekeeping ways if I was to stay on top of utter CHAOS (can’t have anyone over syndrome) in such a huge place.  My home is not perfectly clean or perfectly decorated but I am not ashamed to invite anyone into it nor do I freak out if my doorbell rings.

When I lived in California my house was small enough that I could follow FlyLady’s zones fairly closely as to how they’re published.  This gave me the anchor I needed and the time I needed to learn the mindset.  In this house I’ve changed it.  I have a different “zone” every day, instead of changing zones each week.  Every Monday – Friday I do my daily routines and I “do” one room of my house.  Saturday and Sunday I do my daily routines but I don’t “do” a zone, and I rarely do laundry on Sunday.

For example:  Monday – Friday I do my daily routines (make my bed; shower and dress; swish and swipe master bath; take dirty clothes downstairs; start laundry; swish and swipe downstairs powder room (next to laundry room); eat breakfast while watching the news).  It takes me less than 20 minutes to make my bed, swish and swipe both bathrooms, carry the laundry down and start it, and make my breakfast and start unloading the dishwasher — I usually have oatmeal for breakfast so while that’s nuking I’m unloading the dishwasher.  It all sounds and looks like a lot when I write it and read it back but I’ve been doing it so long now that I don’t even think about it anymore.  If I’m going out of the house it’ll take me longer since I’ll be doing more than slapping on some moisturizer.

Then I spend approximately 30-60 minutes each morning on my zone; rebooting the laundry; plan/start prep for our evening meal; and, spend 2 15-minute sessions decluttering.  These days the decluttering is strictly in my stitching room.  The length of time in a room depends on that room.  If it’s my living room then I dust my furniture and shutters and vacuum.  This might take me 30 minutes if the dogs are in there helping by bringing me toys.  Same goes for my dining room.  If it’s my kitchen it can take me an hour since I have to also damp mop the floor, wipe out some of the shelves in the refrigerator, etc. while I’m purging leftovers.  Plus, it’s a much larger room than my dining room or my living room.  It only takes me more than an hour if I don’t stick to my routines.  This is how I get so much stitching done.  I feel guilty if I sit down to stitch and I haven’t done anything in my house.

Where I can improve is starting myself a control journal as suggested on FlyLady’s site.  She publishes missions (chores) to do in each zone and I think I’m going to start printing them out and putting them in a control journal so when I get to that room in my house I can do them.  There are some things she talks about doing that slips my mind (like dusting the ceiling fans and baseboards).  The nice thing about these missions is they never take very long to do and make a huge difference.

By this time are you (if anyone is reading this) thinking I’m anal or OCD? I’m not, but I do have ADD and this helps me from being overwhelmed.  If you’re not familiar with ADD, sometimes tasks get so overwhelming that we don’t know where to start, so we don’t start, then the task gets even more overwhelming and it’s a vicious circle that will cause a melt-down.  When I start on a room I start at the left and work clockwise around a room.  Every single time!

Hobby Stash

We sold a commercial grade ladder on a local Facebook group on Saturday.  It was like winning the lottery!  Our first piece of “clutter” gone in 2013.  Mister has started gathering the bike parts he no longer needs/wants to sell on eBay.  I have been decluttering my own hobby stash for over a year, but haven’t put any of it up for sale.  That’s about to change.

I have been stitching for 35 years and rarely got rid of any of the designs that I’ve already stitched.  I currently have 3 copy-paper boxes full of patterns, kits, etc., stuff to sell.  I’ll be listing it on my blog first, then on a couple of Facebook groups (and my own page), then I’ll go the eBay route.  I did think of opening an Etsy shop so I’ll have to look into fees, etc., for that.  I have blogged this before, but I also have very few of my stitched pieces hanging on my walls.  I’m going to first use whatever funds we generate to finish buying the framing supplies I need and get a lot of those pieces framed.

Getting rid of excess stash and having my beautiful crafts on display will help me control the clutter in my stitching room and not be so overwhelmed by how much stuff I have that I don’t use.

Blogging

This last bit is hard.  I want to blog more and share more photos of what I’ve been doing.  My computer is upstairs in my stitching room.  My stitching is done downstairs, but all my other “crafting” is done upstairs in my stitching room.  I’m trying to figure out a way to get myself in front of the computer more.  I actually miss blogging!
